About the artist

Dean hails from Port Hedland, a small town in the remote Northwest of Western Australia, where he grew up in the 1960’s and early 1970’s. Dean currently lives in Hell’s Kitchen,  New York City, having lived in Perth and Sydney in Australia, and Hong Kong, Tokyo, and Los Angeles in between.

Dean has had little formal art training, but has been a lifelong “doodler”, which has heavily influenced his drawing style.  Dean’s “process” when producing a piece of art is fairly simple. He typically has a broad concept for the drawing, which evolves into the completed product during the drawing process. Dean usually completes each drawing in one sitting, from concept to completed work, in around 4 to 6 hours.

Like most artists, his inspiration comes from daily experiences, from travels to different places and cultures, as well as being influenced by aboriginal and tribal art and imagery, with its bold and raw style. He is also influenced by “Street Art” which he photographs in his travels around the world.  Although Dean also paints with oils and uses other media, he predominantly works with black ink on paper, and almost exclusively draws portraits.
